The South Beach Diet Doctor Is Back.
Well, it”s a combination of our nutrition and our lack of exercise, which is almost a toxic lifestyle.

Tell me about your new book. How is it different?

In one sense it”s a celebration of the initial program: good fats, good carbs, lean sources of protein, plenty of fiber. Those principles have not changed. But there”s been a continuing march of medical science. We”ve learned a lot from a practical point of view about what our millions of readers wanted as well as our Web site, where we get a lot of feedback, as well as from my patients. The exercise program is new and exciting.

What”s that about?

We have a chapter on boomeritis, including some of my stories, the various baby-boomer injuries I”ve had. Many days, even though I”m a cardiologist, I feel more like an orthopedist in my practice because we always ask about how people are exercising, and they have a lot of complaints.more

By-polls a futile exercise: Rashid

By-polls a futile exercise: Rashid.
?It is totally a futile exercise to contest the by-polls this time,? he added. While commenting on the by-polls situation in NA-55 Amir Fida Paracha said that Asif Ali Zardari was not serious to contest elections from anywhere, he was just joking when he said that he himself would contest polls from NA-55. It is proved that Zardari is the only person who has sacrificed his self stature rising above his personal interests as he has not submitted his nomination papers from anywhere in the country, he added.

As far as Sheikh Rashid is concerned he has lost his validity and could do no more as he was unable to get even 15,000 votes from this constituency, Paracha said. ?Sheikh Rashid is gone with the wind, his chapter is closed and I would suggest him to set a stall of fortune telling (Tota Fal) while Lal Haveli is the best place to serve his pupose,? Paracha said.more

Weighing in: Week Three

July 1, 2009 Exercise | Comments (0) admin @ 2:34 pm

Weighing in: Week Three.
Speaking of exercise, it was a busy week (as opposed to all those lazy, good-for-nothing weeks other people had), so I didn”t hit the treadmill for any of the cardio sessions I”ve been promising myself. I did, though, increase my dog-walking to about 90 minutes a day last weekend before the sky turned black and cracked open. Also started walking up the six flights of stairs to my condo - not all the time, but as much as my bum knee would tolerate. Maxie, whose knees are just fine, finds the stairwells oddly fascinating, though they look pretty sterile to me.

There are some good recipes I want to post when I find the time. (Where exactly does one find time? Perhaps philosophers know.) Also, I”m reading some books on weight loss, one good and some others kind of blah.more

Query on promotion exercise for lecturers

Query on promotion exercise for lecturers.
THE recent promotion exercise in the teacher training institutes (TTI) leaves much to be desired, no thanks to the antics of the Teacher Training Division or BPG (Bahagian Pendidikan Guru).

In the beginning of the year, hopes were raised that lecturers would be promoted to a higher scale.

But now, after five months, nothing has materialised.

BPG has fumbled and bungled every step of the way.

It is long on promises, but short on delivery.

Recently, BPG made a mess of the Pensyarah Cemerlang (excellent lecturer) exercise.

It shortlisted candidates based on the vague citeria of seniority and appraisal reports.

Back at the training institutes, certain lecturers not on the list were nevertheless told to apply, proving that cronyism is well and truly alive.more

CS Training Suspended After PC”s Death.
PC Ian Terry was killed during a role-play exercise at a disused warehouse in Newton Heath in Manchester on Monday.

He was playing a criminal fleeing in a car when he was shot in the chest by a high-powered gun which disperses CS gas. He was not wearing body armour.

The ‘hard-stop’ exercise involves officers blasting a CS canister into suspects” cars to disable the occupants, and other officers pulling alongside to shoot out the wheels.

Disaster training exercise set at airport.
Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity will be the site of an emergency response training exercise.

‘Operation Terminal Stinger’ is scheduled for June 6 and 7 at the facility near Latrobe. The exercise is required by the Federal Aviation Administration and will feature a scenario in which a terrorist cell will down an aircraft with a shoulder-fired missile.

The drill will involve various equipment and about 150 volunteers from more than 40 local, county, state and federal aviation, emergency response and law enforcement agencies. It is being coordinated by the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety and the Region 13 Task Force.

‘Due to the high visibility of the training exercise, we are asking that the public be informed and aware that any activities or events they may witness on or around the airport on those dates are purely stated dramatizations, not real emergencies,’ said Dwayne Pickels, Westmoreland County Airport Authority spokesman.more

Time to get rid of wasteful gun registry

Time to get rid of wasteful gun registry.
It would appear that this invasion was carried out, not as a public safety exercise, but as a publicity stunt backdrop to Mayor David Miller”s ill-conceived idea to reduce gun crime in Toronto.

If there was a concern about safe storage, there are provisions in the firearms act for inspections to be carried out by the Canadian Firearms Centre at a mutually agreed upon time. There was no need for a home invasion by police, especially at 1 a. m.

Is this an admission by Toronto police that the $2-billion firearms registry is unreliable and useless to police?

The registry needs to be disassembled immediately and the millions of dollars used to maintain it spent where it will do the most good.

Editorial: Allow voters greater power

Editorial: Allow voters greater power.
16th and 23rd congressional districts, both of which include parts of the Treasure Coast, an example of a ‘raw exercise of majority legislative power.’

The 16th District, which runs across the state from coast to coast, is majority Republican and nearly 90 percent white. The fact that the incumbent, Tim Mahoney, is a Democrat has a lot to do with the e-mail scandal and the resignation of his predecessor, Republican Mark Foley.

The 23rd District, which winds along a path from South Florida into the Treasure Coast, on the other hand, is majority black (about 52 percent) and Democratic. The incumbent, Alcee Hastings, Democrat and black, has held the seat since 1992 and ran unopposed in 2006.

The petition before the Supreme Court to change how districts are drawn isn”t perfect.more
